One of the most amazing testimonies to survival is seeing a tree growing out
of solid bedrock and on a steep cliff no less! Easily seen in the photograph
are the multiple cracks (or joints) that penetrate the cliff face. Seeds germinate
within these cracks and begin to grow into sizable trees despite the absence
of abundant soil. Assisting root growth is the fact that tree roots secrete
chemicals that help to dissolve rocks thereby making it even easier for roots
to lengthen and widen, anchoring the tree firmly into the bedrock.
