Over time rivers are capable of downcutting deeper and wider channels into
surrounding bedrock. The force of swiftly moving water carrying large quantities
of sediment abrades and wears away at the sides and bottoms of the channel.
This photo shows the Royal Gorge in Colorado. The Arkansas River has cut a deep
V-shaped channel that is over 1,000 feet deep.
